How bosses work in ArcheAge Chronicles: roaming field bosses, dungeon bosses, Hersander's Tower riddles and the timed Hereafter Challenge.
ArcheAge Chronicles Bosses
ArcheAge Chronicles uses roaming field bosses, instanced dungeon bosses and Hersander's Tower, which unlocks a buffed zone boss called the Hereafter Challenge. Each drops different rewards.
Bosses are the main gear progression in ArcheAge Chronicles, and they are not all built the same way. Some roam the open world, some sit at the end of a dungeon, and some are summoned through a puzzle. Knowing which layer you are engaging with saves a lot of wasted time.
Field bosses
Field bosses roam the open world. They can be found in the open, hidden in the map or spawned by a quest. They drop gear, accessories and unique crafting materials.
Because they are open-world, other players can contest them. The game has standard and PvP channels, so a field boss on a PvP channel is a fight with both the boss and other players. On a standard channel, it is a pure PvE race.
Field bosses are also tied to Raeven's Coilstones. A Coilstone is often placed near a powerful boss, which means the trait-point pickup and the boss kill are part of the same trip.
Dungeon bosses
Dungeons are instanced for solo play or parties of up to four. Quest progress is shared, and progress survives a disconnect.
The demo dungeon, Throne of Hinnon, is a high-level dungeon in Diamond Shores. It is the only dungeon XLGAMES has shown in detail. The launch build has dungeons in all three regions, but the exact count has not been published.
Dungeon bosses are the most reliable gear source because the instance is repeatable and not contested. They are also the best place to learn telegraphs before trying a field boss.
Hersander's Tower
Each zone has a Hersander's Tower. The tower works in two steps:
- Make a riddle offering to unlock the tower's reward.
- Receive a unique accessory and unlock the Hereafter Challenge.
The Hereafter Challenge is a randomly selected, buffed zone boss with a timed leaderboard. It is the closest thing to a repeatable score challenge at launch.
The riddle offering is the part most players will need help with. XLGAMES has not published a full list of offerings, so treat any complete list as community-sourced until verified in-game.

Boss mechanics to expect
The producer letter lists several boss-related fixes for launch:
- Bosses resist skills that scale with maximum HP
- Bosses no longer clip through walls or floors
- Several lightning and area skills were tuned against bosses
- Parry durability was adjusted
That tells you two things: bosses are intended to resist cheese builds, and the launch build has had a balance pass specifically for boss encounters.
Reward priorities
- Field bosses: gear, accessories, unique crafting materials, Coilstone access
- Dungeon bosses: repeatable gear and quest progress
- Hersander's Tower: unique accessory plus Hereafter Challenge access
- Hereafter Challenge: timed leaderboard and buffed boss rewards
Solo or group?
Dungeons support solo or up to four players. Field bosses are open-world, so they can be soloed if you are overleveled or grouped if they are current content. The Hereafter Challenge is designed around a timed kill, which favors a coordinated group.
The Auroria map page covers the three regions, and the leveling guide explains how Coilstones fit into a route.
