Which ArcheAge Chronicles classes are gender locked at launch, why Warrior and Berserker are male-only, and when female Warrior and more options arrive.
ArcheAge Chronicles Classes Gender Locked
At Early Access, Warrior and Berserker are male-only; Mage and Ranger are female-only. XLGAMES says gender selection will be added class by class, starting with a female Warrior in the December update, with the goal of removing all gender locks by full release.
The gender lock is one of the most searched questions about ArcheAge Chronicles, and it is also one of the most misreported. Some outlets describe it as a permanent design choice. The official producer letter describes it as a launch limitation with a staged fix. Those are different claims, and the difference matters if you are choosing a class you plan to keep.
The launch matrix
| Class | Weapons | Gender at Early Access | First change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warrior | Longsword, Greatsword | Male only | Female Warrior in December 2026 |
| Ranger | Longbow, Hatchet | Female only | Not dated |
| Mage | Elemental Staff, Thundersword | Female only | Not dated |
| Berserker | Axe and Shield, Warhammer | Male only | Not dated |
XLGAMES has not published the order beyond Warrior. The producer letter says gender selection will be rolled out class by class, and that the goal is to remove all gender locks by full release. It does not give a date for Ranger, Mage or Berserker.
Why the lock exists
ArcheAge Chronicles uses class-specific animation sets, body models and cinematic framing. Each class was built around a named character in the reveal material: a male Warrior, a female Ranger, a female Mage and a male Berserker. Adding the opposite gender means rebuilding animations, armour fits and camera work for that class, not flipping a toggle.
That explains the class-by-class schedule. It also explains why the December update pairs the female Warrior with the Warrior's third weapon, the Gladius: both changes touch the same class pipeline.

What the December update changes
The first post-launch update adds:
- Female Warrior as a character-creation option
- Gladius as the Warrior's third weapon
- Combat balance changes, including Wall of Fire, Wavesword, Longbow Fire Arrow and several lightning skills
- New trait stat nodes and four new Lunastones
- Quality-of-life changes such as rebindable UI shortcuts and separate camera Y-axis settings
The female Warrior is the concrete proof that the lock is being dismantled. It is not a promise that every class gets both genders at the same time.
Does the lock affect gameplay?
No. Gender does not change stats, skills, weapon access or story choices. A male Warrior and a future female Warrior use the same Longsword and Greatsword trees. The lock is a character-creation constraint, not a combat modifier.
That means you should not pick a class you dislike just to play a gender you prefer. If the class you want is locked to the other gender, the honest options are to wait for that class's update, play the class anyway and treat the character as a preset, or play a different class until the option arrives.
How to choose around the lock
- Want Warrior and a female character? Wait for December, or start Warrior now and use the appearance change later if XLGAMES offers one.
- Want Ranger or Mage and a male character? No date has been announced. Pick the class for its kit, not for a gender option that may be months away.
- Want Berserker and a female character? No date has been announced. Berserker is the last class in the current reveal order, so do not assume it is next.
- Do not care about gender? The lock has no mechanical cost. Choose by weapon and role.
The classes guide covers each kit, and the best class page recommends by playstyle rather than gender.
What XLGAMES has actually said
The September producer letter says the gender-locked class system remains at Early Access and that the goal is to expand gender freedom later. The October 29 letter narrows that to a class-by-class rollout beginning with female Warrior in December. The October 21 content post repeats gender locks as a future work item.
Nothing in those posts promises a date for full removal. The "by full release" wording is a goal, not a schedule. Treat any specific date for Ranger, Mage or Berserker as speculation.
